Official image of Mercedes's 2016 FIA GT3 racer have leaked, possibly hints at road-going Porsche 911 GT3 rival

The secret's out for Mercedes, as a French website has published leaked official images of the firm's next FIA GT3 Championship racer based on the new AMG GT supercar, prior to its full unveil at the 2015 Geneva Motor Show.

Likely to eventually inspire a track-biased, more powerful road car to take the fight to the Porsche 911 GT3, the AMG GT3 gets a menacing look with a wider body, a huge aerofoil rear wing and skirts all-round, and a high-tech carbon fibre rear diffuser.

It's not yet clear whether the German racer will get an adapted version of the firm's new 4.0-litre Biturbo V8. But we'll have the full details prior to the car's Geneva debut next week.

The interior is also thoroughly stripped-out, as you'd expect for a championship racer, and sports complex dials and banks of switches in place of the usual climate control and satellite navigation.

Mercedes' last GT3 racer was based on the SLS coupe and enjoyed a fair amount of success on the track. Since AMG began its racing support programme in 2010, the SLS AMG GT3 has achieved some 182 overall victories, 98 pole positions and 930 top ten positions. So the AMG GT3 has an illustrious career to live up to.
